R.I.P. Jack Layton

On Monday August 22nd, Jack Layton passed away. And as I do the show tonight, I can't help thinking about all the people who gathered today at Roy Thomson Hall for his funeral. Such sad news. I couldn't believe it when I heard.

No matter what your political views are, when something as tragic as death hits a family, all bets are off as they say. Please say a prayer for his loved ones who are no doubt going through a very hard time now.

God bless and remember...live, love, laugh, and enjoy. Time flies much too quickly.

What an inspiration

Been some time since I wrote a nice long post. Well this morning I've got some time.

Sometimes you're struck with how great some people are at overcoming obstacles and how good some of us have it by comparison.

Yesterday I saw this great segment about Hunter Guindon, a boy whose one wish it was to cook a meal with Chef Michael Smith. Hunter has cystic fibrosis. The disease is fatal and only God knows how much time Hunter has here on earth. But you have to see this boy. What an inspiration (hence the subject heading of the post). He cooks dinner for his family every night. Every night! And he's imaginative and outgoing and optimistic. He says that compared to other kids who suffer from the disease, he doesn't have it all that bad so he should enjoy whatever time he has to the fullest.

We make plans and those hopes and dreams spur us on to the next destination. This is why human beings are resilient. It's that secret ingredient…hope. What if we didn't have anything to look forward to? What would spur us on?

Here you have a boy who doesn’t know what plans he will actually see through. What amazing adventures he has waiting for him. Life is a careful day-to-day process for him, no plans beyond the next 24 hours. So you've got this tough heartbreaking spot, and a boy who is teaching us all what it means to really LIVE. And even though cooking dinner with a famous chef might be at the top of some of your lists – or maybe you have some other wish you'd like granted – if nothing else, this reminds us to look at what we have and really cherish it. Because it's all so fleeting.

When I'm faced with the harsher realities of life – hearing about wars, passing people on the street who are homeless, reading about debilitating diseases ripping through children and adults, perhaps encountering people suffering from a mental illness – I am reminded that there is more to life than what we see. I realize that any other seemingly huge thing in daily life is dwarfed by comparison. And its elephant-like importance is not so huge after all.

If my heart breaks when I see all this, I can't imagine how God's heart breaks. He created us to have an awesome beautiful life and he wants to help us when that doesn't happen. But so many of us have turned away. To what? Something better? Some other promise of hope and love? Not much of that in the world. Perhaps people are worried that if they believe in something, then they're actually invested. Therefore they have so much more to lose. When you don't believe, it's easier. No tough requirements, you live by your own rules…and you don't get disappointed.

But there's such beauty in surrendering. Every day, I see people who are worn and looking for solace and peace. That's a big one. And even if they don't think it shows, it does. We're all looking for that. We're not sure how to get there and I think some of us are afraid to try for the massive risk we're taking. But at the end of the day, we are a society of believers only when we can see and touch something. So if you're already a bit sceptical, why not try believing? You already doubt so maybe nothing will happen. But maybe it will!

To recap, this post was meant to remind you of two things: 1) enjoy every day. Think about others who are going through a rough time and be aware of how great you might have it. We're not all in the same boat. We don't all start at the same place and sometimes you need someone else to give you a little push, a little encouragement. See what you can do to help even ONE person today, tomorrow, next week. Whenever. It doesn't matter. Just make it count. 2) Take a chance and get to know God. See what He has in store for you. He wants to make everything better. Saying a little prayer is the best place to start. And watch what happens.

I have been waxing poetic about the joys of new and changing seasons, similar to the changing seasons of life. Spring has sprung!

On the show last week, I talked about spring and all the wonderful hope it brings. New beginnings are rife with possibility.

Building on that, tonight I shared a quote I thought was appropriate now that April is here and spring is surrounding us in all of its glory. William Shakespeare said, "April hath put a spirit of youth in everything". What a great quote! Truly, spring rejuvenates us if we let its newness wash over us and erase the old, tired, muddy hurts and memories.

Take a moment to enjoy the new season and the awesome beauty God blesses us with. Our Father gives us a fresh start every single day, and now we see a new start reflected in the world around us. Nature shows us most thoroughly that even the most dismal surroundings can be transformed. Snow and slush surrounded us. And now it has all melted away, making way for verdant greens and bright flowers.

Take hold of hope and embrace the springtime!

the CHALLENGE

Did YOU take the CHALLENGE?

If you were listening on Saturday night, you’ll know what this post is all about. If you didn’t, keep reading. This one’s for you.

You can gather lots from snippets of conversations you hear swirling around you, or talks you have with your friends, loved ones, co-workers, etc. One thing comes blaring through loud and clear when people really get a chance to let go and carp about their lives. Frustration. Anger. Unanswered questions. Typical rat race emotions that do very little to help us lead productive lives. And very often, they come as a result of something gone wrong in a human interaction of some kind.

This might not be you (at least I hope it’s not), but don’t be fooled. At some point or other, a big enough offence has come your way and because of it, you just might be harbouring some bad feelings you don’t even know are there. The other possibility? An offence is coming your way soon. Because that’s just a part of reality and the farther along you get in this life, the more chance there is to hurt and be hurt. We’ve all been on the receiving end but more importantly, we’ve all been culprits before too. There’s no shot at perfection. No matter how hard you try, something somewhere will be lacking. That is part of the beauty of the human condition.

So if we understand this – if we get that we’re not perfect and that people make mistakes – why is there so much resentment? So very little compassion? So much hostility? As I said on air Saturday night, I will be devoting an entire show to this soon enough. But what prompted me to send out the challenge I alluded to at the top of the post was a conversation I had with a friend last week. She was livid. Her co-worker had betrayed her and gotten her into a heap of trouble. I get it. It was a big deal. She could pay for this big time. And she was out for revenge.

I gently reminded her that perhaps this young woman had issues of her own. Maybe she didn’t realize what she’d done would have such bad consequences. Maybe she wasn’t out to get her. Friend 'X' spent a while convincing me of the opposite and yeah, I saw her point. It looked like a bad case of malice and forethought. But when I suggested that she show a little compassion and not let this fester, she could barely contain herself. Dare I suggest that she FORGIVE?!

This challenge is for people who want to go above and beyond. Get better. Be better. Climb higher and dig deeper. Pray for someone – anyone – who’s done something to anger you. Stare it in the face and ask God to help you. He’s helped you more than you know so far in your life. Now it’s time to do what you didn’t think you could. Love the unlovable and forgive the unforgivable. Isn’t it time we started looking up for direction instead of getting our cues from the past? Old hurts and old wounds will continue hurting if we use the same treatments. Take the challenge. You’ll be amazed at what happens.

Welcome to the interactive blog for Christina's Corner!

Well, the blog is officially up! And waiting for you, my loyal listeners, to join in on the musings, the fellowship, and the collective sharing of knowledge. We are here to talk about a lot of great and important stuff going on in the world around us...in the media, in our schools, our homes, and our workplaces.

So what makes this show different (read: special)? Well, this is a show for just about everyone, an interactive dialogue intelligent people engage in via the radio medium. But it goes much further than that. This show primarily targets individuals in their twenties, thirties, and forties. People who are dealing with the task of making major life decisions. People who are picking a certain career path, choosing a mate, starting a family, or dealing with raising a family. And if that doesn't fit your bill at the moment, there's tons of other stuff we get to the crux of, things that affect you and me and millions of other people, including our (for some people, future) children and grandchildren in less direct ways. From a small change to a piece of legislation, to your thoughts on a TV show, to figuring out our respective mentalities and how these differ across the world. What are they? Good for us, bad for us? What do these mean for our futures? Are we headed to a good place? No fear...WE COVER IT ALL.

Sharing a Biblical perspective – or a "God point of view" as I like to call it – is an important part of what the show does. But we encourage all of you to share your own opinions, regardless of whether you think they will be widely accepted or whether you're a veteran listener or a newbie.

This is a show for people who are not afraid to speak up. For people who look around and wish they could throw a thought out there in the ether and get a little feedback on it. Or simply express an idea they think is valuable for whatever reason. Maybe your random thoughts can help people out there going through a rough patch in their lives. Maybe you're concerned about a decision you're making that could impact the whole course of your future and want a little discussion about it. Or just maybe you want to make a comment on the state of local or global affairs as you see it. Wherever you're coming from and whatever your background, it doesn't matter.

Only two things matter. One, God loves you no matter who you are, where you are, or what you've done. And two, God cares about what happens to you and what you do with your life.

So take heart and listen well. You might find a lot of answers here…or at worst, start asking a lot of questions you never had before that you're beginning to realize just might deserve answers.
